Interview with Visionary Spectrum

This week, WIP shines the spotlight on Chloé Frebillot, the visionary behind the Instagram account @visionary.spectrum. Originally from Nancy, France, Chloé has always been captivated by the intersection of technology, art, and fashion. Although her childhood dream of becoming a designer didn't pan out, her passion for creativity remained undeterred. While she kept exploring all kinds of crafts, she pursued a degree in materials engineering.

Currently working in product management, Chloé's journey into AI art began when she started working closely with AI technologies. This discovery allowed her to blend her technical expertise with her creative passions, leading to the creation of stunning, innovative designs. Her work exemplifies the seamless integration of technical knowledge and artistic vision, making her a prominent figure in the world of AI-generated art.

Your background in materials science and economics alongside your roles in product management is fascinating. How do these experiences influence your AI art, particularly in terms of texture and design?

My background as a material engineer helps me replicate specific textures in my work, making them feel more realistic, and product management provides me insights into trends. I use this to create visuals that balance specific details with creative designs. For example, one of my recent projects explored the technicality of stained glass, blending it with realistic textures, bright colors, and innovative fashion concepts.

Your AI-generated fashion concepts, including pasta earrings, stained glass dresses and headwear, and intricately embroidered makeup, are stunning. Can you walk us through your process for creating these editorial fashion pieces? How do you decide on the elements, textures, and colors to include?

Thank you! My process usually begins with inspiration from diverse sources like nature, culture, social media, or even something I saw recently. I select elements of stained glass and embroidery for their unique visual appeal. The pasta earrings were actually for a specific contest on Instagram. I then imagine which textures and scenes would enhance these elements, to create cohesive but striking designs. I also really enjoy incorporating bold colors and glitter details. I then blend all these choices, that is how I generate my fashion concepts.

Your artwork features a lot of transparency and light play. How do you achieve these effects in your AI-generated images, and what do they signify in your work?

To achieve these effects in my images, I try to imagine the behavior of light interacting with the different materials and how the hypothetical photographer would play with shadows and light. I don’t know if I would say these effects have a specific meaning to me but I find them aesthetically very pleasing. I think it adds depth, personality, and almost an ethereal gaze sometimes. I believe it invites the viewer to have a deeper perception and emotions.

Your AI art often features vibrant florals and intricate textures. What draws you to these elements, and how do you incorporate them into your work to convey specific emotions or themes?

I am attracted to those because they evoke a sense of life and harmony. It allows me to explore all kinds of beauty, and how fashion can be interconnected with nature. When incorporating those elements into my AI art, I try to select colors and patterns that enhance the emotional impact and depth of the scene, whether it's the soothing effect of glass petals or the dynamic energy of intricate textures and bold colors. Those features also simply make me happy.

You also create airy and inspiring interior design concepts. What role do space and environment play in your art, and how do you use AI to craft these interior designs?

It is only recently that I started experimenting with interior design concepts. I will continue to work mainly on fashion editorials. But I wanted to craft interior designs maximizing light while incorporating aesthetic, colorful elements and textures that inspire creativity and calm. I like to have them both beautiful and practical, while still experimenting with different styles, textures, and arrangements.

Are there recurring themes or symbols in your work that hold special significance to you? How do these elements evolve across your different projects, from fashion to product design to interior concepts?

I would say that the two elements that are recurrent in each of my works are bold colors and light play. At the beginning of my AI journey, I experimented with different styles and quickly realized that these two elements would become the fundamentals of my work. Bold colors allow me to convey strong emotions and make a striking visual impact, while light play adds depth and dynamism. In fashion, this translates to vibrant, eye-catching designs; in product design, in items that are both visually engaging; and in interior concepts, it creates spaces that are lively and inviting. Of course, it evolves with my new ideas but maintains its core significance.

How do you see AI evolving in the realms of fashion and product design? What potential do you see for AI to revolutionize these industries?

I think it has huge potential to revolutionize these industries by enhancing creativity, efficiency, and customization. Generative AI can be a good tool for designers, enabling them to quickly generate and iterate on designs and find inspiration. Additionally, AI technologies can optimize supply chains, reduce waste by predicting trends accurately, and create more sustainable production methods. Overall, I think AI will empower designers and brands to push the boundaries of innovation.

What are your plans for the future, and how do you see AI-generated art playing a role in your upcoming projects and goals?

I'm not sure where this journey will take me, but I'm excited to continue expanding my work and generating new ideas. I look forward to collaborating more with fellow AI artists and potentially partnering with brands. Who knows where it will take me? The possibilities are endless, and I’m excited to explore them.

What advice would you give to someone just starting to explore AI as a tool for creating art? Are there any particular challenges or misconceptions that you think they should be aware of?

If you're new to AI art, as I pretty much still am, dive in with curiosity and experiment a lot. Learn the basics of AI tools while leveraging your artistic skills. Keep up with advancements in the field. Remember that AI enhances creativity—it doesn't replace it. Stay mindful of ethical considerations and enjoy discovering the ways AI can help you express yourself!

What do you wish people would ask you? Is there anything else we should share with our audience to help highlight your story and artwork?

That is an excellent question ! I'm always excited to be asked for a new collaboration 😉. Collaborating with other artists or creators is incredibly inspiring and enriching for me. It opens up new perspectives, challenges my ideas, and often leads to innovative projects that I wouldn't have pursued alone. I believe collaboration is key to pushing the boundaries of creativity and exploring new artistic territories.
